Birth Doula Services FAQ
Q: What do birth doula services include?
A: Think of a doula as your expert labor, birth, and postpartum expert. Doulas are trained to support you and your partner through pregnancy, birth, and postpartum as well.
There are many things that doulas provide during each stage of the process, but here are a few examples:
- Providing valuable information about what is actually happening in your body both during labor and postpartum to help you understand and give clarity.
- Walking you through procedures and processes.
- Helping with your physical comfort. This can be done through different means of touch, massage, and breathing.
- Creating an ideal birth environment.
- Acting as an advocate for you, your partner, and your baby while in the hospital or birth center.
- Meeting basic needs during the chaos of labor.
- Emotional comfort, encouragement, and support.
- Support in feedings post-labor.
During labor and delivery, doula services mainly include physical and emotional support to help you push through and bring your beautiful baby into the world.
Q: What are the benefits of birth doula services?
A: According to the Mayo Clinic, research has shown that receiving support from a doula is associated with:
- A decreased use of pain relief medication during labor
- A decreased incidence of C-sections
- A decrease in the length of labor
- A decrease in negative childbirth experiences
Q: Should I use a doula regardless of my birth plan?
A: Absolutely! Many people believe the myth that doula services are only for those that choose a natural birth, however, this could not be further from the truth! A qualified and experienced doula will be able to support births in every form: medicated, unmedicated, scheduled cesarean, unplanned cesarean, multiples, surrogate births, inductions, and VBACs.
Additionally, a doula can actually help build your ideal birth plan. Before the big day ever arrives, it’s important to consider your wishes regarding your labor and birth, You’ll want to record these preferences in a written birth plan for your doctors and nurses to reference. A doula can help you in creating a plan that doesn’t leave out any important information, such as your opinions on pain management. Even if things don’t go perfectly according to plan, your doula will have communicated with you extensively on this plan and will be able to advocate for you towards the next best option that you discussed.
Q: When should I contact you?
A: We recommend you wait until you confirm your pregnancy with your medical provider before scheduling a consultation. And it's never too late to hire a birth doula - we've been hired by a client in early labor (though we don't recommend waiting that long)! Booking early means more support and guidance from your doula team and a better chance that we have availability.
Q: Will my partner feel excluded?
A: Hiring a doula is beneficial for both parents! Your partner is relieved of the pressure of remembering every detail, and able to rest when needed. Our clients have reported feeling more connected and present with their partner with the support of their doula. And check out this blog post for more on this!
Q: Are birth doulas only for natural births?
A: Absolutely not! This is one of the most common misconceptions about birth doulas. CLEbaby doulas are experienced in supporting births in every form: medicated, unmedicated, scheduled cesarean, unplanned cesarean, multiples, surrogate births, inductions, and VBACs.
Q: What happens if I go into labor early/late?
A: Rest assured that we are prepared for anything. Once you secure your doula support, your CLEbaby doula is officially on-call for you. After supporting hundreds of births, we understand the need for flexibility.
